Austin Country Club is one of the most prestigious private golf clubs in Texas, but buying a home nearby doesn't guarantee membership. With a reported 10-year waiting list and an initiation fee estimated around $200,000, connections can matter just as much as money.
I'm Nicole Cooper, Broker/Owner of NBC Realty, former University of Texas golfer, and Austin real estate professional for over 15 years. I've played this course, and I'm sharing what buyers really need to know about the golf, luxury homes, and lifestyle.

A Historic Golf Club on Lake Austin
Founded in 1899, Austin Country Club is Austin's oldest country club. Its spectacular location beneath the Pennybacker Bridge combines championship golf with Lake Austin waterfront scenery.
The club has a remarkable connection to legendary instructor Harvey Penick, who taught Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, and even gave me a lesson when I was in high school!
The Pete Dye-designed course is beautifully maintained, with fast greens, dramatic elevation changes, and challenging shot placement. The front nine features stunning lake views, while the back nine winds through ravines and rugged terrain.
It's a golfer's paradise—provided you appreciate Pete Dye's sometimes frustrating designs!
Austin Country Club Membership: Money Isn't Everything
Austin Country Club is a private, member-owned club with a highly selective membership process.
- Estimated initiation fee: $200,000
- Reported waiting list: Approximately 10 years
- Membership: Approximately 450 members
- Admission: Subject to club approval
Unlike some clubs where membership is largely a matter of waiting your turn, Austin Country Club's selection process is less predictable.
And remember, buying a home overlooking the 18th fairway does not guarantee membership.
Luxury Homes Near Austin Country Club
Real estate surrounding Austin Country Club ranges from established condominiums to extraordinary waterfront estates.
In my video, I highlight properties ranging from condos under $800,000 to a $19 million waterfront estate with acreage and a private boat dock.
The biggest factors influencing home prices include lot size, condition, privacy, and especially golf course or Lake Austin views.
Here's an insider tip: Consider homes across Lake Austin on the north side of the Pennybacker Bridge. You may find spectacular water and bridge views for considerably less money, although the drive to the club is longer.
Another important consideration? Some of the area's best luxury properties are marketed privately through off-market real estate networks rather than traditional listing websites.
What About the Lifestyle, Amenities & Schools?
Austin Country Club offers more than golf. Members enjoy tennis, pickleball, swimming, dining, social events, and marina access on Lake Austin.
The atmosphere is traditional, established, and understated rather than flashy or resort-like.
Surprisingly, most surrounding homes are not in gated neighborhoods, although the club facilities and a small condominium section have controlled access.
Much of the neighborhood south of Lake Austin is also served by highly regarded Eanes ISD and Westlake High School. School boundaries should always be verified for individual properties.
The Birdies & Bogies of Austin Country Club

Is Austin Country Club Right for You?
Austin Country Club is ideal for buyers who appreciate history, prestigious golf, Lake Austin views, and established luxury neighborhoods.
But if immediate golf membership or a fully gated golf community is your priority, other Austin-area clubs may be a better fit.
That's why at NBC Realty, our philosophy is simple:
Find the lifestyle, then the house.
Whether you're considering Austin Country Club, Spanish Oaks, Barton Creek, or another Central Texas golf community, I'd love to help you find the right fit.
